NOTES

  1. John Mylrea was the Sumner for the parish of Ballaugh according to his MI, and born in 1706
  2. According to Parr's abstract of laws (c1690), sumners had a range of duties including collecting tithes, bringing offenders to prison and standing at the door during a Church service to "whip and beat out the dogs".
  3. Could his mother have been Ellinor Mylrea als Qayle who died in 1733?
  4. Most likely family tree is as a descendant of William Mylrea and Ann Christian, who had sons Daniel, Thomas, William and Robert. While the life of son Daniel is well documented, the others are not so straightforward. However, William (b1667) is a good candidate to be John's father
  5. John Mylrea married twice. The first wife was Joney Kinread, whose 7 children are nominated in the will. His second wife was Elinor Caine and although she had 3 children, none seems to have survived since they are not mentioned in Ellinor’s will (1780) or John’s (1781)
  6. Children Joney Kinread = Jane 1734, Daniel 1738, Mary 1741, Ellinor 1744, Elizabeth 1747, William 1752-1665, & John (no LDS but was of legal age when his mother died in 1764)/ Elinor Caine = Margaret 1776, Thomas 1777, Joney 1779
  7. Of the children,
    • Jane might have married Philip Radcliffe in 1766 (Ballaugh)
    • Daniel might have married Ann Keiggeen in 1767 Ruhseen)
    • Mary married William Kaighin 1765 in Peel and had a large family
    • Ellinor married Thomas Gawn 1765 in Ballaugh, seems to have had five surviving children, and remained in Ballaugh
    • William died in 1765
    • Nothing is known with certainty about Elizabeth or John
  8. If Daniel & Mary are indeed siblings, then both left Ballaugh for the southern part of the island as did John's hypothesised siblings Edward & Mary
